Why are albino domestic rats relatively common2007-11-24 22:19:11

I have a difficult job selling brown or black rats but light coloured ones sell easily. I breed all my own rats for the shop and I do not sell live pets for reptile food.

I own a pet store

Because in a laboratory, they have all albino animals, unless they are trying to study the effects of coloring. Anyway, they have them all albino so noone gets attached to any one rat and then is reluctant to perform test or experiments or administer medicine to any of them. Not that all scientists are creul, it's just better if you don't think of your subjects as pets. Anyway, most pet rats today are lab rat offspring, the way we got colored ones is they did have colored pet rats before lab rats, but not as commonly, after the lab rat breedings, there were so many, they could be available to anyone who wanted one. That is why there are so many albino rats, because of Lab rats.
Spazrats is correct...PEW is not always albino, but albino is always PEW. It's recessive though, it takes two copies to show. Meaning, both parents have to carry for or be albino to produce it. If one parent isn't albino and doesn't carry for it, you won't get any in the litter. "Feeder breeders" tend to breed albino mice and rats, might be why there seems to be so many. Fortunately, more and more people are discovering what great pets they make.

Albino Carrier x Albino Carrier= 25% albino pups

Albino Carrier x Albino= 50% albino pups

Albino x Albino= 100% albino pups
