Why did my hamster die2007-11-24 22:19:15

I bought a black bear hamster about a month and a half ago. About a month after I got him he started swelling up really big. He wouldnt move or do anything at all. I thought for sure he was going to die. Then about a week later all the swelling went down. He started running in his wheel again and eating and drinking. He had been fine for about two weeks but then all the sudden I found him dead today. He had water and food. I am just wondering what happened.

I had the EXACT same problem with the EXACT same type of hamster. Her intestines got twisted.

They usually live about 2 years at most. In the wild, most won't last a year as they are food for other animals. I have no idea what made him bloat like that, but possibly some kind of infection, that lessened his years.

There is a chance he might have had an infection. Rodents are very fragile and succumb to illness very quickly. It is a defense mechanism, rodents will try to hide that they are ill for as long as possible to avoid getting targeted by a predator. As soon as you noticed your pet was sick you should have taken it to a vet. I don't mean to sound mean, but when we purchase an animal we must understand that it is our responsibilty to care for them including taking them to the vet if they are sick. People seem to not think small animals are worthy of the cost of a vet visit just because they are a small investment unlike a dog. Keep this in mind the next time you plan on getting a pet because beyond a pet fish you will need to take a pet to the vet if it is sick. If you took it to the vet it could still be alive now

i think is was an infection. but already hamsters dont live long it wasnt your fault but next time bring your hamster to a vet!

sometimes they leave the pet store with an infection or illness and we don't know it til its too late.
