Why did my hamster lose the fur on his front legs2007-11-24 22:19:16

I just noticed today that my hamster has lost almost all of the fur on his front legs and they seem a bit dark pink. What it's going with him and what should I do?

If you have the type of wheel that is made of metal bars, it could be rubbing off, The best type of wheels are the plastic ones that have a solid area for them to run on. Or it could be a diet thing. Do you give fresh foods like peas sweetcorn carrot ? They are all good for your hamster, so are rice krispies. Or it could be mites, but I'd expect hair loss on the body too with mites. I'm not a vet, just the mum of a hamster lover. How old is your hamster?

its nothing,i had that problem with my guinea pigs ( when i had one) thats the way theyare.their legs are hairless.

dirty dancing. some things i will not desscrible. filthy little beasties when they get in heat. have you hear of cunniligus? the littler varmit are the worst of all speciies. why? who knows. keep them far away from children.

I agree completely with the poster, Anita. If you have a multi-level wired cage, a wired wheel, or a plastic wheel with slots, your hamster's feet are slipping through and it's legs are getting bruised. A temporary/cheap solution would be to weave cardboard through the wires to create a solid base for him to walk on, but the best option is to get a solid based cage and solid based plastic wheel. Unless you notice him dragging or avoiding use of a limb, his legs will heal in time with no assistance.
