Why do Hamsters each their babies2007-11-24 22:19:19

My daughters hamsters had babies. We put the male in an different area, and she still ate them. She had four, squished two of them and ate the other two and did it in 36 hours. Is this normal? What can I do to save the next litter??

when baby hamsters are born they have there mothers sint so if u put the male in the cage it wil have a different sent and the mother wot no it is her babys. also if u or your daighter has touched the baby hamsters before a month the baby will also have your sent and the same thing will happen. now if nobody has touched the babys the mother shouldnt have ate them. but.. if u keep the babys in the same cage as the mom for more than a month the mom will eat them so after a month u should have seperated them.good luck with the rest

I've seen people say you need to give female hamsters up to 3 chances to have babies.

Hamsters make awful 1st time Mums. Nobody has ever quite worked out why, as I've seen.

Honestly, you just have to hope she does a better job next time, nothing else you can do.

okay, this is TOTALLY normal. it happened to mines :[ well, you can't really stop it unless YOU want to take care of the baby hamsters yourself, which may be impossible. but another reason would be is 'cause if you touch one of the babies, the smell of the baby turns different..so the mother ends up eating the baby thinking that it doesn't belong to her anymore. so, if she has babies, don't touch 'em.

my hamster was a new mom and she was a freakin nut, so we thought she would eat ALL her babies. she has 10, then i saw one had a bite mark in his head and was dead. then some dissapeared into her tummy and there were 6.
