They are drawn to it for many reasons. Just like some folks like to scratch themselves and smell their hands afterwards. It's the smell. It also offers a warm retreat loaded with minerals that they can feed off of.

It gives them a medium in which to lay their eggs, and the eggs hatch maggots, which become more flies.
Its just perfect to lay there eggs in!
