Why do hamsters store food in their cheeks

Why do hamsters store food in their cheeks2007-11-24 22:19:19Answers:

My hamsters take food out of their food bowls, and store it in their cheeks, then take it back into their houses,in the corner and spit it out there. Its like they are storing it for a late night snack! I think its just a natural instinct. Like in the wild, they would find food, store it in their cheeks and take it back to their "house",since the food probably wouldnt be there when they got back,if they didnt take it with them, but in a cage they have a food supply right there, some just do the instinct anyway.

so they can eat it lator
Cause' they like to!

Agree with Warden. It's instinctual to store food for later when it might become scarce. Being in a cage doesn't change instinct, and they are simply not intellectual enough to quit just because they have constant supply.
they are hoarders, they take it and hide it.
The reason they do this is because in the wild, hamsters would travel up to 8 miles a night in search of food. So they would store it all in their cheeks to carry back to their nests.
to carry food to their nest and to save the food..its lke us taking food home in a container..only hamsters take it in their cheeks to the "hidding" spot..it might be their bed or were they go to the washroom..who knows..
