Why do my gerbils do this2007-11-24 22:19:44

when i put their wooden hous in their cage, they don't sleep in it. they dig ALL of the bedding out of the house, no longer is it comfortable to sleep in, and then they wind up sleeping in a corner. everytime i put the bedding back in, they kick it out again. they refuse to use their house. why do they do this?

They are just being gerbils. They are silly. Mine do that all the time. Sometimes they will sleep in the house sometimes they just want to make a nest in a corner somewhere. Don't worry about it. This is just normal silly gerbil behavior. Leave the house in their home.

How long has this been going? Try to move the house to a different area of the cage, or put in a different kind of bedding. If it's generally a hot day, my hamster has been known to do the same thing..

make a pouch or something and fill it with bedding and put it under the house and see if that works

i have been breeding gerbils for 10 years now i think you will find the problem could be they need a tank instead of a cage gerbils love to dig and chew i had this problem when i had a cage so i changed to a tank and all the gerbils i have had have never been happier making barrows also when you have finished with your toilet roll place the tube from the middle in there tank they will chew it to bits in minutes they love it.

My gerbils did the same thing when I bought them the wooden houses. So I just stuck with the large plastic igloos and they sleep in there all the time!

Its just a gerbil's natural instinct to burrow. I dunno why, but its perfectly fine. Sure is cute though. :)
