Why do my guinea-pigs eat the newspaper in their hutch
Why do my 2 year old female guinea-pigs eat the newspaper in their hutch? They are happy, healthy and well fed guinea - pigs and are handled every day. Please help!
Answers:almost every guinea pig will do that. you have to have some other kind of bedding over it. also call the newspaper company and ask if the dye is soy based. if its not, stop using it
This is s.o.p. for Guinea pigs, and as for a reason I don't know except they all do this.Offer them soft wood to gnaw and they will enjoy that too.
my guinea pig did that all the time, and i really wished she didn't.
I think guinea pigs like to chew on things, since their teeth are always growing!
(my guinea pig always looked like she had a lot of fun tearing up the newspaper! though i still didn't want her doing it).
so i ended up removing all the newspaper from her hutch, and just give her extra bedding and timothy hay instead, for her to sit and chew on (the hay I mean). that stuff is good for them!

Try toilet paper rolls or apple wood. They also sell chew sticks and other chewies at the petstore.
All rodents constantly chew on things to keep their teeth grinded down.Just give them plenty of things to chew on, paper towel rolls were always a favorite when i had mice and gerbils.And its not like it's really too much of a health problem if they're chewing their newspaper,it won't hurt them.
My guinea pigs do that all the time too. They think it's just junk food. I mean, if your house was layered with junk food, wouldn't you want to eat a little bit of it? Or they might need something to chew on. So, there is no need to worry about it.
They proboly are tring to naw the paper because they need to naw on stuff to keep their teeth short or else their teeth could grow so they can't eat anything.
This is quite normal, they need to chew on things to file their teeth down and in your case it is the newspaper. You should try providing them with some untreated wood or a wooden block from the pet store. Pet stores also have these little tunnels that are stretchy, made out of wood and edible, just an idea. As you probably know they need at least 1 cup of fresh produce, you could give them harder food stuffs for example - carrot instead of spinach. Hay and pellets are also good at filing their teeth.
they just really like to chew.get them some chew toys and treats that hang on the cage and it should stop it
My rabbit did the same thing. I then bought a special hay that is used for bedding at the pet shop which is okay for her eat. It is not that they are not well fed. My mum left a blanket close to my rabbits cage and she pulled it through and chewed it to bits and she still had plenty of food in her bowl. I think it is just fun for them.
Try getting some alfalfa blocks. Ours loved these!
