Why do my guinea pigs fight during floortime2007-11-24 22:19:45

When I did floortime with my piggies today, they started chattering their teeth like CRAZY! Then there was a HUGE squeak, and they grabbed eachother violently with their teeth. Me and my friend were quick to sperate them with towels, but they NEVER fight in their cage. There's not even the SMALLEST chatter! A similar thing happened to my friend's guinea pigs during floortime. Why did this happen!? Someone please answer!

That is odd. Usually the cage is the disputed area. Maybe they are fighting over the unclaimed territory.

Whatever it may be, I would not let them have floor time together. You don't want fighting like that. But as long as the cage is still working out, then do not seperate permenately.

Yes, that is very odd. Like memphisgal said, usually the cage is the place where they fight, not floor time. Was the area that you did floor time neutral to both guinea pigs? If it was not a neutral area you may decide to do floor time again (with towels handy) in a neutral area. Although from personal experience it hasn't mattered where I did floor time.

If they are fighting in their cage as aggressively as you worded it during floor time, then I would separate them. If they do not fight in the cage but only during floor time, I would keep them in the same cage but have separate floor times.

Just one thought, are they girls? When a sow is having her time of the month she may appear to be more moody, but I doubt it would be the cause of the behavior described.

did younotice if it was the dominant one in the cage that started the fight ? I have seen this behavior when too many animals were caged together in too small a space. The less dominant pigs wind up with no territory , and when placed in a new area they fight very hard to make some of it there own.

It might help if the dominant pig is let out first , and then the other one .
