Why do new guinea pigs fight2007-11-24 22:19:46

I have 2 guinea pigs, my friend also has 2 guinea pigs. All of them are girls. We introduce them in a neutral area everytime they see each other and they always fight. They are all perfectly healthy.

I have a heard of guinea pigs that i raise.

to answer your question, your guinea pigs are trying to establish (for lack of a better term) who's going to be boss.

usually the male is dominant and runs the heard.

but since u just introduced them to each other u will need to find a large empty box and let the meet on there terms.

do not introduce them to another in it's own cage because that pig will be the dominant pig and can and will be aggressive to the other.

here's an example, suppose you're fat and your friend is skinny & nice looking and is taking away your gf, then you want to beat her up, that's the idea...

It's good that you introduced them in a neutral area, this is a good start. As to why the fight? Probably because they are working out who is boss, in other words the hierarchy. Once this is established they should get along fine. I get the impression that you are re-introducing them every time they meet. This is good, they will have forgotten each other since the last time and will have to do the whole butt sniffing, teeth chattering thing again. As long as no blood is drawn I would not worry.

From a book i have it says that guinea pigs fight for something like to be a leader,jealousy,or just for fun (i dont think so )just keep eachother away they can fight and someone can get hurt.

Believe it or not, this is pretty normal. In nature, guinea pigs travel in herds, and there is a sort of "hierarchy" within the herd. When your pigs are all together, they have to figure out each others' status. There's lots of butt sniffing, chasing, mounting, nipping, teeth chattering, etc., but really the only reason for you to separate them would be if blood is drawn.
