Why do people say that grey squirrels kill red squirrels2007-11-24 22:19:47

Not good, more so considering the grey is not a native species to the British Isles.

It is not correct to say that a grey squirrel will kill a red squirrel. Actually, the grey carries a virus that is passed to the red and kills them off. The grey squirrel is immune to the virus it carries but it is passed to the red very easily and it is a horrific death.

Greys do not physicaly attack and kill Reds, it is the squirrel pox that Greys carry that kills Reds as they have no immunity to this virus.

because numbers of red squirrels went down in the UK after grey squirrels were introduced .. for a number of reasons such as competing for territory & food, the reasons would include fighting but that doesnt necersarily mean that if any given grey squirrel is put with any red squirrel it would kill it.

contary to what others say about greys not killing reds.greys eat a more varied diet they will take eggs/chicks from nests,and unfortunatly young reds from their dreys if they get the chance.
