Why do some hamsters turn cannibalistic I had three and fed them ALL the time but one still turned c2007-11-24 22:19:49

They were ALL female. And the youngest one ate its mother and sister. Do you know why? HELP!

hamsters shouldnt be put together. they get more "vicious" and are territorial. they see anything else that moves in their cage as a threat. best thing to do is get another cage to put one in. a great animal to get that is very social is a rat. male rats together is a great pair or even more since rats are more calm than hamsters! good luck

I don't know that much about it, but I think certain types of hamsters are very territorial. They might turn canibal if they don't take shine to their neighbors?

Hamsters can be very territorial and protective. Maybe instead of feeding them all the time you should've gotten them seperate or a bigger cage. My friend's hamster had babies (for the first time) and she ate them because she didn't know what they were and she was very territorially aggressive.

What kind of hamsters? Syrian hamsters (also called golden or teddy bear hamsters) should NEVER be kept together - they are solitary creatures in the wild, and will fight to the death if forced to live together - cannibalism is a natural course of action when there's dead meat laying around! Young syrians need to be separated from their mothers at a pretty young age to stop this happening.

It's just instinct. Usually, they are more prone to do so when one dies first. However, I have had to separate mine on several occasions because of that...they kept biting each other while the other one slept. They are rodents, so nibbling and chewing on any and everything is fairly normal.

I had a pair many years ago, can't remember what kind they were, but they were very small and gray. The lady at the pet store said she only sold them in pairs because they were like Lovebirds, they had to have a buddy or would die of loneliness. They were fine for months, they would play chase. it was funny as all get out.

then one day, I woke up and went to feed them and one had killed the other. About a week later, the other one died.

Sooo... who knows.

same thing happen to me!it might be over territory.or she could of been pregnant.she could be a little crazy if i was you id get rid of the thing
