not all serian hamsters are called teddy bear however, there are many other names, like panda bear hamster, alien hamster (hairless), fancy hasmter, golden hamster, the list goes on and on

becasue they are cute like teddy bears and are brown and furry.

All Syrian hamsters (including teddy bears) are related to the original 11 or so hamsters that were brought to Germany from Syria in the 1930's. Since then, hamster breeders have bred hamsters much in the way that dogs are bred for certain traits. Teddy Bear Hamsters are simply hamsters that have been bred to have long hair. They're the same species as a short-haired hamsters, it's just that they have long hair.

As with short-haired hamsters, Teddy Bears can be any colour that is known in the hamster world.

As someone suggested, Teddy Bears were probably named Teddy Bears because they are cute and fuzzy and the name is more appealling to young customers than "long-haired Syrian Hamster".

Simple answer. Would want to buy a hamster with a cute breed name like "Teddy Bear" or a plain name like Syrian. It is all about selling the hamster. For some strange reason people seem to like a cute name better than a plain one. For example if you a choice between buying a notebook that is plain and black and a notebook that is the same but is called the "amazing notebook" of course you would go with the second one because of the name. Also many sales people use the word "Teddy Bear Hamster" in order to fool the person into getting a more expensive hamster but the sales people don't tell you that you could buy the same one for less. Do you know understand the use of fancy words in order to make the hamster appear more better than the plain.
