By disinfecting the cage, you are killing any bacteria that might build up. This will help keep your hamster healthy and also assist in keeping any odours down.

If you are worried about chemicals possibly hurting your pet, there are several environmentally friendly cleaners available that you could use. I use Orange TKO, which I bought at a Pet Expo. I only use a TEENY tiny amount per cage and it works great! Keeps everything smelling fresh and clean! I highly recommend it! It also works great on any dog or cat odours, like urine, that you might have in the carpet.

In the end, whether you use chemicals to clean or not is totally up to you. I can understand your worry about your pet's health and the reason behind you not wanting to use chemicals. But I also see the benefits to using a good safe chemical.

Well... don't use stuff that u do on house stuff, like sinks and windows. NONE of that. uhhh. i think petsmart has a spray made for it, but u can always just use water and paper towels. :)

I don't want any chemicals near my precious girl baby teddy bear hamster named Sherbert either! I wash the entire cage in soap and hot water every week and change the bedding...no chemicals used. I wouldn't risk that but if you continue to do so at least ask your vet if it is safe.

Every pet store will sell a disinfectant spray especially designed for small animals, that will kill all traces of harmful bacteria.
