Why does hamster block up the tubes in its Rotastak cage with sawdust2007-11-24 22:19:51

Misty is a short haired Syrian hamster. When i put fresh sawdust in the cage it kicks it into the tubes (including a long bendy one) and then pushes it (with its back legs) until it can go no further and goes back for more. It carries on doing this until the tube is packed solid and it has cut off all means of getting to its food or water. Thick or what? I then have to dismantle the tubes and put the sawdust back, after which hammy usually gives up. It is a problem because once the tubes burst open. She didn't get out but I do have a cat.. Also she fills her wheel with food so when she tries to run in it it makes a huge din or won't go round at all.

you need to take the tubes out of the cage and get another toy as the same thing happend ti me and i just got another toy and it was fine and as for the food on the wheel i would just cut low on the food and whenever she goes with full cheekpouches to her wheel if the wheel can come off then take it of until she goes to her bed and empties her pouches then put the wheel back on

-----insulation and camouflage..she may be Bord and trying to find something fun to do. -----My hamster filled the tubes with sawdust then dug a hole though it to run through. ----- I think that is what Misty was trying but didn't know how to finish the job.
