Why does hamster block up the tubes in its Rotastak cage with sawdust2007-11-24 22:19:51

I think your hamster is just making a place for it to sleep. It probably thinks that the pipes make a good bed, and so it fills them up with bedding. To avoid this, try putting a small hamster house, such as this one:

My hamster has one of these houses, and he like to fill it up with bedding and sleep in it. By installing one of them, your hamster will have a new place to sleep and fill up with bedding and probably wont clog the pipes.

This is typical hamster behaviour and their is not an awful lot you can do about it. Hamsters are natural horders and sometimes the things they do makes no sense!! But that adds to their cuteness.

All you can do is hope that Misty gets bored and decides to store her food and kick her sawdust else where. I also have a syrian and he is 15 months old now. Every so often he will randomly move his bed and his horded food to other areas of the cage, so Misty may do this at some point.

My hamster also used to kick sawdust down the tubes, so i made sure no sawdust was placed around this area making it harder for him to kick it down there. he grew out of it in time.

My Hamster Did This Its because It wants to be cosy the tube is small and warm in their also maybe because they can run out of it easily

You have a bored or depressed hamster. When it kicks the sawdust in the tube, it is just playing. I recommend you get it some toys and play with it more [what I mean by play with it more is take him out of his cage and let him run around for about 30 min. That will stop it from kicking saw dust in it's tubes. Now for the food problem, you need to make a small box that fits in the cage so he can sleep and store food in, so he wont put it in his wheel. I for one, am getting another hamster for my other hamster so he wont get so lonely, because I work for 6 hours a day. So maybe you could buy another hamster, make sure you examine the hamster to make sure it is the one you want and if you have a boy hamster get a boy hamster, if you have a girl hamster get a girl hamster, so they wont have babies, and the male will kill the babies. So will the mom if she senses something wrong, she will also kill them if there isnt food or water for them.

awwww my hamster does that with bedding materials i think its cute!

but i dont have a cat,i think the best thing for you to do would be to get a new cage that has no tubes and hammy will be fine

is it a tunnel cage if so try something else other than woodshavings or try seeing if u can move the tunnel abit so it wont manage block it but still can go in and out of it
