Why does my Guinea pig bite me when i handle it2007-11-24 22:19:52

If you follow the instructions on that site you should be able to eliminate the way you are holding your guinea pig as a cause to him biting. The second thing is to wash your hands thoroughly. Thirdly you may want to book an appointment with your vet, mites are very painful for guinea pigs, they can be treated with ivermectin once a week for a month. Now if you want you can treat it but if you overdose your guinea pig by accident he will probably die, thus why it is safer to get a cavvy savvy vet. Alternatively you can use kitten (not cat) revolution.

I've had mine 2 months and he still runs away too. As for the biting thing, wash your hands before handling him to make sure you don't smell like anything he may want to eat. If he stops running away I'd love to know what you did to get him to stop.

well don't discipline it! sometimes some guinea pigs take longer to get used to humans more than others. try to lure it to you with a slice of cucumber or something like that. just pet it if its brave enough to come to you. once it knows you wont hurt it pick it up slowly and gently. put it back before it can freak out. just do it frequently and for short amounts.

You need to start small and then work your way up. Start off by speaking softly to him. Then try feeding your guinea pig a vegetable by hand. He will learn your trust this way. Then move on to petting him in the cage. This way he'll get used to your touch. Then, after you feel prepared, you may attempt to pick him up. He will resist, of course, because it is in it's nature. They are scared of heights. Hold him for short periods of time at first and then slowly elongate them.
