Why does my dwarf hamster cry when i try to pick it up
i just got my hamster yesterday.. i got home and put it right in its cage so it could get used to it. Then today i thought would be ok to maybe try and pick it up and when i reach to try and grab it. it cries... why is that? im worried about it.
Answers:I'm presuming you don't mean cries tears.. if so, she may need a vet.
In all seriousness, she's probably just scared. Make slower movements, and just offer a treat for now. If she accepts the treat, let her eat it, then slowly try to slide your hand under her to pick her up. It could take a couple of days or so.
If she keeps just making a squeaking or crying sound when you go to pick her up, you could try keep going. If she's really scared, she'll twist around onto her back and make attempts to bite you. These can be false though. If she continually does this, try and cup her into your hands to pick her up. Hamsters are often worse to pick up than hold, and you may find that once you're actually holding her, she's pretty happy.
Also sit down to take her out, preferably in a room with no escape routes, just in case she jumps, she won't have to far to fall.
If she seems more than scared, in pain at all, for instance crying when you're not trying to pick her up, or she stops eating/drinking (or drinks a lot more, though some hamsters drink a lot naturally, so this is hard to judge) then you should take her to the vet for a checkover.
Also when you say grab.. I hope you don't mean this too literally, or you'll hurt her.
