Why does my female guinea pig hump my other female guinea pig2007-11-24 22:19:52

I have just bought 2 guinea pigs. One is about 5 months old and one is almost a year. They are both female and both put together in there new home at the same time.

I have read everything I can find on the pigs but I cannot find a good answer to why the older female mounts and humps my younger cavy.

I know abotu the dominance factor and how they establish it but I have yet to find one thing supporting humping as being a way a female bonds with another or that it is how the older one dominates.

Whats up with this?

scroll down to the Behavior section. it mentions mounting among same-sex groups as being a common show of dominance, like in many other species.

Okay i had this same sittuation with my brothers rabbit and mine and we thought they were both males but it turned out that one of them was a female so it could be that the one that's not humping the other is a female. So go to the pet store you bought them from and tell them your story and ask them to double check them both.

Guinea pig do this all the time. It's to find out who is dominant. That actually happened to me today. My guinea pig and my friend's guinea pig were humping eachother like there was no tomorrow! We got a little nervous, because one was way older then the other and we ended up just getting pee all over ourselves! Believe me, (and my friend) THEY WILL STOP HUMPING EACHOTHER SOON! After a while, the two guinea pigs stopped humping eachother and started cuddling! It was a site to see! Have fun watching them hump! Good luck!
