Why does my guinea pig bite me2007-11-24 22:19:52

I have a guinea pig that when ever I pick her up, she nips me. I don't know why, as I am sure I am holding her correctly. I have had her for only 1 month and 3 weeks. I have another guinea pig that doesn't bite me, but I have only had her 1 month and a week. I try and spend equal amounts of time with both of them; about 10 minutes each.

She probably bites you because she is still unsure of herself and her surroundings. It could also be her personality. She could be very protective of your younger one.

Clean out the cage on a regular basis so that the urine doesn't build up. When this happens it can make them grumpy. The other thing is that it could be her time of the month, during this period they are very moody and bite for no reason.

Keep handling them every day, the more the better. You should make extra time to bond with your guinea pigs. A good time for this is at night in front of the tv, or during floor time. Floor time should be done for as long as possible in as big a room as possible. Feed them a balanced diet of vegetables, pellets and chaff. If you are adding extra vegetables or modifying the amount or what you give your guinea pig then it can cause stress.

The only other thing that I can think of is this; do you have a regular routine? Do you feed them at 7am every day, 4pm cuddle time, 7pm dinner time for example.

I know my kids were bit by their gp. I was never but I think they fed the piggy by hand and also the hands may smell like food. Make sure it's well fed and not by your hand. Make sure it gets held on your lap and you pet it on it's back often, make sure it has a chew thing in it's cage, like the wooden hidey box they chew the edges and also hide in. Or a cardboard tunnel b/c it could help the biting problems. go to cavyspirit.com and other websites to read up on biting too. Out of 13 piggies only one bit in our house. Good luck.

Hi... Maybe shes just a very nervous guinea pig... its quite unusuall for a guinea pig to bite... about 1 in 200 or so im told.
