Why does my hamster bite me

hamsters do not have terribly good eyesight, so if you put a finger through the cage, it may mistake it for food.

You are perhaps too rough when handling it. Be gentle.

It may be startled by noise, or of not being secure in your hands.

It may be sleeping, or tired, or just fed-up of being picked up a lot. Let it rest when it needs to. Let the hamster learn to trust that you won't hurt it, and it will come to you, in time.

Make sure you wash your hands before handling it. They can smell the faintest smell of food on your hands.

Avoid sudden and jerky movements and cup when you hold her.

cos it is scared.
As all other answers have said, just sheer fright. Can you imagine how big your hands must look to a tiny hamster. Try not picking it up but coaxing it with food. They really aren't the cuddliest of animals. I also hate any caged animals, they were meant to roam free not to be put in a cage, why do we humans think it's o.k. to do that with a living creature? Sorry not to be more helpful, I'm just soooooo against caged animals.
If you're picking him up during the daytime hours, you've probably woke him up. Try talking into the cage very gently until he wakes up. Open the cage slowly. Try to coax him to the open cage door with a sunflower seed or pellet. If you can coax him all the way to your cupped hands, you should have no problem at all with him bitting you. Just remember to keep your hands cupped and close to you, so he feels safe.
i think this is because your hamster will smell food on you. in this case before you handle your hamster wash your hands. or maybe the hamster is scared of you because you miss treat it or it has not been tamed yet. to tame it get it to eat food off your hand and then let it run on your palm then try picking it up. usually hamsters bite when they are scared or stressed. Gd Luck !
hamsters bight because they are scared. just give it some time.
Well, maybe your hamster doesn't feel safe by the that you hold him. Next time that you hold him, and he bites, see if the way that you are holding him, that you would wanna be held that same way. If not, then, rearange your hamster so that if you were him, you would feel safe! Also, your hamster might be smelling something on your hand that smells like food. Wash your hands, before, and after handeling your hamster. This is all that I can really think of! Thanks, and, good luck,
