Why does my hamster fill his wheel with sawdust2007-11-24 22:19:22

My hamster has a couple or more times filled his wheel with the sawdust from his cage floor...litterally crammed in top to bottom!! (He has a modular 'cage' with a solid external wheel and tubes all over the place). This activity has kept him awake for hours after he would normally go to sleep. Why is he doing it?? I have seen hamsters fill tubes before, perhaps if it is cold and they want to try to hibernate, but nothing like this!! Any answers?

Hamsters make absolutly brillant pets, and this is one of the reasons why. they do crazy stuff that makes no sense to us, and keeps a little smile on us all day!

My hamster is 14 months old and he has never in those 14 months used his exercise wheel, but he will kick his carefresh bedding around, move his bed randomly to different levels ( its a 3 storey cage) and go crazy if he hears the rustling sound of his hamster food bag!

There is no explenation for why your hamster does this, except that hamsters are natural nest builders, they adore their home and constantly move things around to how they like it.

The important thing is to respect that in his mind he is doing it for some specific reason and you need to let him get on with it. Sit back and enjoy all the funny things he does, its what makes him special. he sounds very much like my gorgeous ginger furball!!

they are strange little animals. mine uses his exercise wheel but fills it at the same time so he is running around in sawdust. its natural for hamsters so dont get worried.

I have three that LOVE to fill up their wheels with bedding! ...Then they run in them WITH the bedding... But it is completely normal! We asked this same thing on a hamster forum website and everyone said it was normal.

I don't know why they do it, but alot of hammies seem to do this. =)
