Why does my hamster prefer to eat in his house

Why does my hamster prefer to eat in his house2007-11-24 22:19:24

He would go outside and look around, then dash to his bowl, store it, and dash back to his house. I put cotton balls in there, and he made a nest out of it. And it seems like all he does, is sleep and eat in there, I barely see him out of his house.

Answers:

Your hamster eats in his house because that's where he feels safe. In the wild, hamsters quickly go to their food, then, dash back into their houses. This way, they know that no other hamster can take their food (even in your case, their are no other hamsters)!

I hope that this answers you question! If you have any other questions, you can email me at: pethelper4@yahoo.com!

yeah, my guinea pig does that also. I recomend keeping his bowl as far away from his house as possible, and when you put the food in, you could try taking the house out for mealtimes. Also, i found this worked with my piggy- keep his cage out in the family room and have music on alot. i worked like a charm in 4 days! But you do have to keep it out there :D
It's a safe place to be. You have to remember that to him, you look 500 times bigger than he is, so he doesn't want you to steal his food. he must have loved the cotton balls, leave them in there.
Hamsters feel safe in their house. Not only is it safe in there, if they don't eat all their food that they brought with them, they have extras for later. Hamsters are very insecure so they always try to hide in corner and their houses.
My hamster does that too.she has a leved cage and she will grab them one by one and run down to her hut and just eat in there but for some reason they like to eat in private because sometimes they think you r goin got hurt them or take there food away and they usally just store it for a snack.

hope i helped!

It is natural for your hamster to do this because in the wild they get eaten by larger animals while they are distracted eating food. they hide the food like squirrels so that other small animals cannot eat their food. he has made a nest with the cotton wool firstly for comfort and security and secondly to keep warm and not feel alone. try putting a treat on the palm of your hand to tempt him out then when he gets used to coming out for treats when he sees you put your hand in even without a treat he will come to see what you have got and then you can hold him and play with him.

Hope this helps
