Why does my rabbit constantly lick my hands, arms, neck, and stomach2007-11-24 22:19:26

About 3 days ago, my grandmother purchased for me a black and white Polish Dwarf rabbit. He was very skittish when I first brought him home (which is certainly understandable), but now he is very warmed up to everyone, and even lets you pick him up off the ground. (Which he didn't used to.) Now that he's used to everyone, he constantly licks, and licks, and licks us. I used to think that he had to go to the bathroom when he licked me, because I would put him in his cage, he would do his business, and I would take him back out. But recently this has not been the case, and he's been licking us all more than ever. What I want to know is, why does he do this, is it good or bad, and what should I do about it, if anything? Any help with this would be great. =D

More than likely, he is licking the salt off of your skin. Animals need salt in their diets but most pet foods that you buy at the store have very little or no salt in them. You can buy a salt lick for your rabbit at any pet store and at some grocery stores such as Super Wal*Mart, Food World, Target, Winn Dixie, etc. Put it in his cage and let him go at it. As to the other answers I saw, there is a good chance that he is showing you affection when he licks you but if he is licking you as much as you say, the chances of it being solely affection are slim to none. Although I must say, if you buy him a salt lick, he uses it and still licks you constantly, you may need to take him to a vet to see if there is a problem with him not being able to absorb the salt that he does take in.
