Why doesnt my hamster chew anymore2007-11-24 22:19:54

she use to chew on her house and her tubes, now her teeth seem to be getting longer and she still doesn't chew as much anymore. i am worried about her teeth getting to long. i have put wood and other things in there for her but she doesn't seem to care.

I had a hamster like that a long time ago.Try giving her a dog biscuit.They love these and its excellent for their teeth.For my hamster, I had these hard tablets that were for dogs, and they were excellent for her teeth.Also some hamsters like chewing on actual twigs for the natural flavor.Try breaking off a twig from outside, rinse it off, and place in the cage.

I think you are right to be concerned, maybe a trip to the vet, the teeth can be trimmed very quickly.

hampsters need their front teeth clipped. its usually best to put a small bite item in their cage. it keeps their teeth trimmed. you can go to your local pet shop and they should be able to direct you to the right thing. if you can hold her still, gently with your hand around her neck(DON'T SQUEEZE, JUST FIRMLY) you can get them to stop squirming, then with a very small pair of nail clippers (baby size) you just clip a little off the front 2 teeth. so she can close her mouth. their teeth are like our nails they trim very easily. if in doubt take her to the store you purchased her at and have them do it. good luck

If her teeth have grown too long she cant chew properly and needs her teeth trimmed . I found a little toenail cutter worked well. There is a pet nail trimmer that has a little guard so you cant cut too much . A pet store may be able to show you how to trim them .

You can rub the wood with fruit juice to make them more tasty.
