Why has my hamster quit running on his wheel2007-11-24 22:19:55

I have had my hamster *a honey bear* for about 9 months now. He has been healthy, and he is friendly. He loves to be held and loves his chew sticks... however, he used to run on his wheel ALL THE TIME.. now, he has quit that.. but is still active. I read that they need alot of excersise. He is fat fat fat.. but hasnt got anything different as far as food or treats go. How can I get him back on the wheel? I have tried the excersise ball, but he just sits in it. I got him a "play ground" and he just walks around... never on the wheel.

He is a happy healthy hamster... how bad is it that he isnt running on his wheel at ALL??

there may be something wrong with the wheel, or he may have flipped out of it and be a little timid getting back to it. you can try a different brand of wheel and see if that peaks his interest a bit. as logn as he stays pretty active, he should be okay, but if he's getting fat it's not good for him to not be running in the wheel or ball.

He might have an injury that is making it unpleasant to run around. You might want to consider getting him checked out by a vet... if you are low on the cash then just keep an eye on him and let him rest. He might need to heal.

If he is not hurt, then maybe he is simply getting OLD. Hamsters sometimes change activity preference as they age. Not running on the wheel is not going to harm him, he know what he is doing.

he probally is depressed. try playing with him and holding him. if hes not depressed he mght have an injury or might be in his final stages. sorry. i hope you can fix it.
