Why is my gerbil losing toenails2007-11-24 22:19:57

My gerbils are fighting again and the one that is less dominent is missing a toenail on one foot and there is another one on his other foot that was bleeding a little bit and it looks like it will come off too. They are two and a half years old. my mom just thinks it is because of their age. im not sure. please help?

They've been fighting. Thats obviously why. Gerbils are VERY territorial and will even kill eachother, giving they dont know eachother from early age, or they are male and female. You need to try separating them with a cage divider for a while if they are new to eachother.

you said it yourself. they're fighting. therefore, they are injured and losing toenails. they aren't MAGICALLY disappearing. why don't you separate them.
Hard to say, but if their fighting that can be it-but remember gerbils are prone to dieases too, and they might be infected-or if they are too long that can cause a problem.
i heard that rodents only get along if theyre related. u should seperate them into two different cages. itll naturally scab up so i dont think you have to take him to the vet unless you want to.
they're fighting; gerbils hate to live among one another. if they're two boys then they're fighting for territory. sometimes two girl can get along but not often; they like their space. a boy and a girl...well, you could guess why they're fighting. you should separate them as soon as possible. leave them tagether and they'll only keep fighting.
You gerbil is losing toenails because it's fighting with your other gerbil. Why is this happening? Hard to say. All animals get a little more tempermental with age.
