Why is my guinea pig biting, can I make her stop
Addition:
Contrary to the beliefs of another post, guinea pigs actually have very good eye sight, they can even see in colour. The thing that limits them is because their eyes are on the side of their face, so like horses, they have, I suppose "blind spots."
I know that sometimes when Guinea Pigs aren't feeling well they act like that. You sometimes cant tell that they're sick, the only thing that warns you is when they act mean.
does she have enough chew toys? her teeth could be growing and she wants to bring them down also if your hands have the smell of food on them then she may smell it and think it is food and try to eat it i really have no clue why she is biting her friends maybe she is actually smelling them do they jump or squeal when she does this or do they not care?
YOUR GP MIGHT THINK YOUR A THREAT TO HER. WAS SHE LIKE THIS WHEN YOU GOT HER? IF SHE WAS THE PREVIOUS OWNERS PET SHOP .DID NOT TREAT HER WELL AND SHE DOES NOT TRUST HUMANS. IT ALL ON YOU GP I WOULD THINK SHE DOES NOT TRUST ANYONE TRY PUTTING A GLOVE ON(THICK ONE) GIVE HER A CARROT TRY TOUCHING HER IF YOU THINK SHE IS GOING TO BITE RETRACT YOUR HAND . JUST BE GENTLE WITH HER . LET HER KNOW THAT YOU WONT HURT AND YOUR THEIR TO HELP HAR TAKE CARE OF HER. THAT HAPPENED TO ME ONCE BUT I DID THIS AND IT HEPLED. SORRY IF IT DOESN'T HELP JUST TRY IT.
as you know, guinea pigs have very bad eyesight and might mistaken your hand as food. , or the guinea pig probably thinks your hand is a threat to it,, so you should try petting it often to show it that your hand is NOT a threat.
We have had seven guinea piggies, and five of them tended to bite and sometimes draw blood. Here's the remedy: every time it bites at you, hold it up to your face firmly and make the "P" sound in its face five times. DON'T yell at your piggy--just make the P P P P P sound. It will back up its head and be scared of that quick blowing action in its face. Believe me, it works like magic. Again, please don't mistreat it. Love your piggy by holding it. If it forgets and bites, be consistent with the "P" discipline. Good luck!
It is definitely NOT common. Having owned 50 guinea pigs and never been bitten I doubt I'm just lucky.
It sounds as though this pig is overly confident. Piggies go by smell and taste rather than sight so she also may be mistaking your hand for food. I really doubt she is doing it to be nasty.. piggies do not bite to fight back and defend themselves - they run away.
There's not really much you can do to sort it out because she is only biting you accidentally, thinking you are food. Just be more careful, keep your skin away from her mouth, cut the food into big bits rather than small bits so she doesn't accidentally nip you.
