Why is my hamster chewing on her cage bars2007-11-24 22:19:59Answers:

most of the time its because there is nothing eles for it to chew on and hampsters need to file their teeth down or the can curl and cut them or make it so they cant eat... try getting some wood blocks from a local pet store

it wants out of there or it is sharpening its teeth
My hamster chews on the bars too. It was chewing on the bars because she was sharping teeth, maybe you need to by a salt wheel that's how she stop chewing the bars.
do you have any type of chew toys in the cage? If not he is probably trying to file his teeth or he could just be trying to get out which is natural.
usually it's because they're bored

make sure she has a wheel, and get her a gnaw block or something

you can get one from petco

she is doing that because it probably feels good and it keeps her teeth short. i suggest getting her something else to chew on but you dont have to.
all hamsters chew the bars its perfectly safe!your hamster won't get sick get a fish tank(empty no water) and put him it that with a mesh wire top then he can't chew
to get out
Hamster's teeth continually grow and this is a way for her to wear them down. When I had a hamster they made little chew sticks made of wood just for this purpose. He'd go to town on them! The next time you go to the pet store maybe look and see if they carry them.
my rats do that all the time. they are dulling there teeth down. they need something to chew on.
my hampsters are doing that to. its normal thay been doing it all there life. there doing that becouse there teath a always growning so thay need to bite on somthing hard. i would just let them do it
my hamster does the same thing all night long
Hamsters usually chew their bars out of boredom. Though many hamsters do this often, it is NOT SAFE! Chewing on the hard metal bars of their cage can cause brain damage and misaligned teeth. Excessive bar chewing can cause the brain to become misaligned, in turn causing brain damage. Also, the metal bars can cause the teeth of break off and be different lengths. If your hamster is doing this, she is probably bored. It would be in her best interest to play with her a bit more or, if you already play with her a lot, put some toys in her cage for when you're not with her. You can also try to get wood for her to chew on since it won't harm her. If it doesn't work, it would be best to put her in an aquarium type cage. Hope this helps!
In an attempt to escape or to wear his/her teeth down
Hamsters have to chew to keep their teeth strong, this is normal. If you want to stop it try getting a chewing block from a pet shop.
She wants to be let out. You could hold her, let her run around, or put her in a plastic ball and let her rund around! She just wants attention.
Hamsters are rodents. They chew. It wants to get out, but dont worry. Chewing is good for their teeth
Because she wants to get out. lol. That s why my hamster does it. Most hamsters do that
Because she's bored.
