Why is my hamster going to the toilet in his house2007-11-24 22:19:59

Mine poops everywhere!

Ive got a 'hamster potty' he doesnt wee anywhere but there, which is great, its so much easier to clean the cage now.

Just put it in the corner of the cage and the hamster should learn to use it.

Our hamster snowball used to do the same -

She always looked on a potty with disdain, she would ignore that corner of the cage and never go there...we took out her house in the end, and gave her a choice of a cardboard tube, and two cardboard boxes.

She ended up using the tube as the loo, and making a nest in a corner of the cage. She seemed much happier, was certainly a lot cleaner as you could throw away the tube.

Boy hamsters are worse for this kind of problem though, I think maturity helps. Sometimes offering a treat after he's woken up from his little house, while he's still in it, works. noone likes to eat in their toilet! He then associates his little house with breakfast, and should hopefully be more inclined to poo elsewhere.

Goodluck, hamsters are the best pets ever, ours were hilarious, I taught her to climb the stairs which was great until she escaped and climbed up to my parents bedroom! She lived till 4, I'm very proud of her, lol : )
