Why is my hamster itchy2007-11-24 22:20:00

my hamster is itchy, and keeps rolling around her cage, also, her pooch is red and looks swollen, and what does that meen?

Answers:

Sounds like wet tail. Look it up on google on how to take care of it.

it could be itchy because of dry skin or allergies? u should get it checked out by a vet!
well i have a hamster also and i would first change the cedar chips of whatever you have in her cage because it could be allergic to it. I would contact the vet and ask them what they think if that doesnt work.

good luck!!

Maybe she has fleas?
No, it's not wet tail like suggested. It could be mange which needs to be treated by only a vet. It is cureable only if gotten there soon and not waiting a long time. She would be given an oral treatment and there are ointments to stop the itching, soften the skin, and help the hair grow. Another thing it may be is a diet definency related problem. One more that comes to mind is allergies to the bedding you use. If you are using any wood shaving or saw dust litters, this may be all or part of the problem. To in the future keep allergies from litter occuring, use only a paper product litter like Care Fresh or Critter Care (I use both). Allergy symptoms may include sneezing watery eye/nose, hair loss, with Syrians their feet or any part of the body that ouches the litter will turn red and swell up like a balloon. I've seen this with some of our Syrian rescues and a hamster that walked through cedar mulch in our flower gardens, he was faster then me. His little feet swell up like little tiny ballons and were bright red. Pine and cedar shavings also can cause respiratory infections when toxic fumes are present in the litter from the animals urine mixing with the litter. This can also be fatal. There are other causes, but for the right diagnosis take her to the vet for treatment and she will love you even more for relieving her pain.. The itching is painful to her.
you might want to specify what a "pooch" is.if it's her privates then she might have "wet tail", so check for diarrhea and any blood. if her "pooch" is her stomach then look for scabs because she might have mites (the main type is not contagious to other animals or people, only other rodents)
boy..i dont know. ive never had a hamster!!! soorrrryyyy
she could have mites, i read that if hamsters have mites, you can spray them with bird mite spray. if your hamster has fleas, then use cat flea powder.

Take her to the vet damn it! She is sick and will die if you don't do something about it. The poor thing is in pain. Make sure her house is clean and cuddle her and help her and don't ignore her-you are her guardian, and as such you need to be responsible. Give her carrots for enegery and take action ASAP!
She could have mites that are causing her too itch, but the main concern is her swollen pouch. It is always advisable to get your pets checked over by the vets if you are never sure what is wrong with them.
