Why is my hamster losing fur on its back toward its tail2007-11-24 22:20:00

My hamster is well looked after clean cage, fed varied diet and allowed to run about in it's ball so why has it started losing it's fur. Is it likely to die soon?

Answers:

No it doesn't mean he's going to die. My hammy is having the same problem, he isn't scratching but has lost fur on his back. He has been under treatment for suspected mites, but the fur isn't growing back very quickly.

Other than this he is eating and behaving normally and the vet said that the mite problem could be worse due to his age. I think it will be a good idea for your hammy to visit the vet and it can have a bit of an MOT as well. The vet will check for any underlying problems that may cause health issues.

is he scratching? Do you have any other pets in the house? He may have fleas, or mites, or lice.

Does the tail end look damp and dirty all the time now? Could it have wet tail? If so, go buy Dri tail at your local pet store. Also, what kind of bedding do you use? Some hamsters can get an allergy to the pine or cedar bedding. I use the recycled type bedding such as 'yesterdays news' or 'critter care' natural bedding.

it could be ichy mites under the skin which you cant see, hamsters are prone to skin problems.you can get stuff from pet shop or even better take it to a vet..hope it gets better soon

How old is your hamster? Depending on the "breed" (golden, dwarf, etc...) depends on their normal life span. My golden started losing hair on her back end, she was a golden and 2 years old. I took her to a vet (yep, she was a great little girl.) I found out that she had some dermatitis. I gave her a medicated bath and they gave her a dexamethezone shot and she got better... for 3-4 months. Then she passed, bald to her upper arms.
