Why is my hamster losing its hair & also has a swollen bottom lip2007-11-24 22:20:00

My hamster started losing it's hair around the belly area and around the eyes last week. I thought maybe to clean his cage but the hair loss got worse (thicker in the same areas). My hamster also has a swollen bottom lip which happened around the same time as the hair loss. I don't know what's going on with my hamster. Please help!

Take your hamster to the vet. While due to warm weather some hamsters will lose some hair they should not loose enough for you to notice.

My questions for you are: how often are you cleaning the cage it should be done weekly with you scooping out dirty litter or wet litter daily. Food should be removed every day. Food should not be left to rot.

It sounds to me as if your hamster may have an infection on her skin. This would be caused by not cleaning the cage enough.

The swollen bottom lip could also be a sign of teeth problems. Does she have her bottom teeth, have they grown out of control?

Please take your hamster to the VET immediately.

Why are you waiting on this? Why are you wasting time asking unqualified people on the internet who have never seen your pet, let alone examined him, these questions?

GET HIM TO THE VET. What you are describing is not normal - and this is no time for home remedies. If the swollen bottom lip isn't dealt with, he may have trouble eating which will begin to affect his entire health.
