Why is my older rat biting my younger rats ears and pulling her fur2007-11-24 22:19:28

I have an older female rat, and a younger female rat, they've been introduced and have been living in the same cage for about a month now. This morning I heard squeaking coming from the cage, my older rat was biting the younger rats ears. She was doing it hard enough to hurt her, so I separated them for awhile. When I put them back around each other the older one immediately began chasing the younger one and biting her ears again. When I pulled the older one away, she had a hold of the younger ones neck, kind of like when a mother cat carries a kitten (around that area of her neck). My boyfriend had them on the bed, and they were ok at first, but then they started interacting, and my older rat did the same thing, where she bit the younger ones neck, but this time she pulled her by it. I just want to know, if its because shes getting old, or going nuts, or something.

she is establishing dominance and territory claims, common. make sure there is tons of food, use 2 food dishes, and maybe a larger habitat, a 10 gallon is inadequate for 1 rat let alone 2, i suggest a 20 long tank, or a multilevel wire cage, if you plan to breed them, you will have to remove the preggie to the 20 gallon, she will eat the babies if there isn't enough space, and the juvie rats WILL get out of a wire cage. momma rat is saying, look here tiny, this is my rodeo

Its how she shows her dominice. it will be a problem when the younger one starts drawing blood. If she isnt then they should be fine.
