Why is my pet rat is oozing reddish liquid from her rectum
She is acting and eating normally and does not seem to be in any discomfort or pain at all. The reddish substance has been oozing from her rectum for several days and it looks like blood only not as dark red. It's a little smelly a but not foul smelling. She has no tumors or lesions that I can see. At first I though maybe she and her cagemate got into an altercation and she got injured there, but she's not in any pain and it's not improving or getting any worse.
Does anyone know what this might be caused by and how to treat it?
Answers:This "reddish liquid" would be a combination of blood and mucus. Internal tumors and colon cancer will cause rectal bleeding. These you can't see. This hemmorhaging is an indication that something is internally wrong and she needs to see a vet.
Rats are very stoic animals and it will take a lot for her show signs of illness. They are prey animals, they mustn't show signs of weakness in order to stay alive. By the time she does show signs of illness it is normally too late to do anything about it.
Please do not take her condition lightly. A rat needs to loose only a teaspoon of blood to go into shock.

It might be something that can be cleared up with just a course of antibiotics...why wait.
Note: Rats do not have anal glands like dogs do
Rats do not bleed when they are in heat.
