Why is there still a major misconception about what is acceptable hamster bedding2007-11-24 22:19:31

P.S.

You can be Yesterday's News at Pets-mart.

Aspen bedding can be quite dusty. If breathed in by something as small as a hamster can cause lung problems, aswell as getting in their eyes and causing irritation.

Cedar and pine bedding has natural oils that are toxic to small animals and can poison them.

Like you, I have always used aspen bedding on my one year old hamster. and he has been totally fine. But now he is getting older I have swapped to care freas bedding which is more absobant, reduces smells and is the safest form of bedding for small animals. Its recycled, pulped paper.

aspen is ok, but if you can avoid using it, then id stop. I use soley carefresh and i love it. It is soft and comes in nice colors. The reason to stay away from those beddings is because it has harmfull chemicals that make is smell better when they pee on it, and that can cause respatory problems in the future

So it might be a good idea to just get rid of the aspen and keep using the paper based bedding (like carefresh)

I think I know why everyone here says stay away from aspen. Well, have those books ever owned hamsters? People know to stay away from aspen from experience. Sure, it may not damage the hamsters health, but think about the hamster mentally. How does he feel about it? Books are not always the best source, I personally think that experinece is all that is needed, really. Hope I helped!
it has chemicals in it, don't use it
i don't know because the hamster websites say use aspen, i an currently trying it and the only thing i see is that its pointy and sharp on some of the ends, i prefer super shavin's by cozy critter, available at petsmart, i know pine, and cedar are no good, they cause respiratory problems, so i stick with what I know, and the aspen smells nice.I Will go back to super shavin's after this bag though. And I see no dust from the aspen, but my main concern would be the pointy tips puncturing a pouch. and yes i always get the compressed also at petsmart, it is reasonably priced and lasts awhile i have 3 hamster cages to keep clean. they love the super shavin's.
Pine and Cedar are toxic to rabbits and the bigger small animals too. Not only do they cause respiratory problems, but they cause liver problems after prolonged use.

I used Aspen for my hamsters in the beginning, but I like Carefresh. I like the colors, and I have a long haired male who kept getting wood shavings tangled in his fur. The Carefresh doesn't do that at all. =)
