One Word. INSTINCT. In their natural homes, semi deserts, there isnt much room, so they are very terretorial. Also, the male might just be trying to mate. EITHER WAY KEEP THEM APART. Are you trying to breed them? You need to introduce them. Since hamsters have poor eyesight they depend on smell to identify friends. Putting their cages next to each other and swapping the hamsters between cages without cleaning them will give them the chance to get used to each other's smell and eventually smell like each other. When you do finally decided to put them together a neutral area is best. Bath tubs work great since there's a lot of room and the tubs don't hold smells. Be prepared to separate them if fighting starts. Using 2 cups so you can get one out while the other is contained works well. When rodents fight they usually bite around the face, genitals, scent glands, tails and feet. If blood is drawn then give up on that pair. It rarely gets better and usually ends up with the one being bitten dyeing.
