Why my guinea pig alway scratch him self2007-11-24 22:19:34

please dont ask people in the pet store most of the time they dont really know what they are talking about and they arnt cirtified vets so they arn't qualified to diagnose ur pet.

Excessive scratching typically is a sign of mites, a parasite that burrows into the skin and causes pain and itching. They are microscopic, so you can't actually see them, but symptoms include excessive scratching, excessive hair loss, scabbing, sensitivity to touch, loss of appetite, etc. Mites are a common ailment of pet store guinea pigs and are highly contagious between pigs (humans cannot get these mites). Mites CANNOT be treated with flea and tick sprays and/or powders (and pine shavings don't do anything either). There isn't anything guinea pig-safe you can find in a typical pet store that will treat mites. Your best bet it to take your pig to a veterinarian. You CAN treat the pig yourself using ivermectin, which can be found at most farm and livestock stores, but you have to know what you're doing- an overdose can be fatal. A vet will typically treat the pig using ivermectin or selamectin (Revolution for Kittens).
he is itchey or you dont give him baths or he has lice
