Why wont my gerbil drink2007-11-24 22:19:32

I got a gerbil a few days ago, the first day he emptied the water bottle but for a few days he hasn't been drinking. The bottle is staying full. Is there something wrong? He is eating. I don't understand. HELP PLEASE!

gerbils are desert rodents. Your gerbil seemed to drink a lot that day so he has probably stored and is doing what he would do in the wild. If he goes on for too long then take him too the vets. You also might want to check the bottle is working properly as they can sometimes be a bit iffy.

Have you checked to make sure the bottle isn't clogged? It is possible for those little ball-ended bottles to stop working without you knowing it.

If it isn't clogged check with the petshop where you purchased him. It's possible his cage mates are showing signs like this as well.

Gerbils are desert animals which means their water intake is very minimal. He should be drinking a little, but maybe not enough for you to notice any is missing from the bottle.

The first thing I would do is press the ball at the mouth of the water bottle to make sure that the water is coming out. Sometimes I notice that my rats are trying to drink but nothing is coming out. If you unscrew the cap you can see if anything is blocking it or if the ball is stuck.
