Will male guinea pigs always eventually fight2007-11-24 22:20:05

I have 2 male guinea pigs

Rico and Luis

When i got them they were in the same cage

so, they are kinda brothers

when they get older, will they fight?

or since they have been with each other for so long will they not?

Rico is older

Rico is Peruvian and Luis is Abbyssinian

Please say they wont!

It is very difficult to say. Guinea personalities do start to change as they become 'teens' and this is the time when they may start to fight for dominance.

The breed or the colour of their coat doesn't affect their personality.

There are things you can do to prevent this such as giving them two separate pigloos (places to sleep), two food bowls, two hay racks and making sure they have a lot of space etc etc etc..

If they do decide to fight later on, please don't worry, this happens a lot! You can just put some mesh or some kind of divider in between them so they are not actually living together, but can see smell, and lay next to each other if they like...otherwise you could get them both neutered and get them a girl each to live with!

But like I say, don't worry! I have a pair of boars here that have been together 2 years without a problem :) You will just have to wait and see what happens.

they will because male guinea pigs are very territorial, especially when it comes to females. they will fight for dominancy, normally the guinea pig with the cleanest ears is the most dominant, therefore they will begin to literally chew the other ones ears off - it's really sad and very easily infected. you should seperate them or one could eventually die.

They will fight/scuffle to establish dominance. How badly or much they do this will depend on their personalities. You do need to make sure you have PLENTY of space for them ~ see http://www.guineapigcages.com for cage size recommendations. Males are much more territorial than females and so need a bit more space.
