Will my gerbils be ok

Will my gerbils be ok2007-11-24 22:20:07

To provide them with things to entertain themselves then I recommend rodent-safe chew sticks, dog biscuits (they love these and they are healthy!), a small pile of chinchilla sand for dust bathing, and a good pile of unscented toilet paper for nest building.

Put two water bottles in the cage in case one goes empty (unlikely with gerbils) or one stops functioning.

Place the food scattered around the cage so, it takes them longer to find it and will entertain them as well.

And of course make sure that your cage is in a safe area. Not in direct sunlight or drafts. And away from any other pets in the house.

If it is a possibility then have a friend or neighbor drop in every few days just to make sure all is well.

But, if you have to leave them alone then I am sure they will be just fine if you take the right precautions.

Good luck and have a great trip!

P.S. I forgot to add that they will not forget you on your vacation. Gerbils are pretty clever critters despite what most people think about rodents.

WELL, IF THERE LIKE GUINEA PIGS THAT GORGE THEIR FOOD YOUR GOING TO HAVE A PROBLEM MAYBE HAAVE UR LOCAL PET STORE WATCH THEM IT WOULD BE SAFER hope i could help.
I have 2 rats and I have left them for a week without someone to check on them. Starting on Monday June 18th, begin adding food to their bowl and keep track of how much you are adding, and how much they are eating. By June 25th you will have your answer. Just for additional comfort, you can add a little more. For my rats, I left about 6 cups of their food in a large glass bowl, just to make sure they would not run out. I also attached 3- 16 oz H20 bottles to the cage. They usually go through 1.25 bottles per week so 2 would have been fine. Just in case a bottle decided to leak I added an extra for good measure. Depending on the season, if it's really hot where you are, you may want to add an additional bottle just to be safe. Water is more important than food. They can live 3-4 days w/o food, but only about 24 hrs with no water!! My girls had plenty of food and water when I got back, and they were MORE than excited to see me. They greeted me at their cage door when they heard the keys!!
