Will soft water harm a guinea pig2007-11-24 22:20:09

We just got 2 female guinea pigs...about 6 weeks old. We have a water softener and I've been using water right from the tap for the water bottle. Is that ok?

It's fine, as long as there's no lead in your pipes!

DON'T PUT VITAMIN C DROPS IN THEIR WATER, LIKE THE PERSON ABOVE ME SAID!! This will cause the water to have a funny taste, and the guinea pigs won't drink it! Buy vitamin C tablets that you crush up and put in their food, instead!

Yup, hard water, soft water, it doesn't really make a difference apart from the taste.

Soft water won't harm your guinea pig. Make sure you are putting guinea pig approved vitamin C drops in the water so they are getting the nutrients they need.

Vitamin C drops for the water dissipates, anyway, and you can't tell how much vit c they're getting that way.

You can use the vitamin c tablets (without sugar) ~ about 1/4 of one, or better yet feed them some good fresh veggies with vitamin c (fruits should be given only occasionally as they are very high in sugar for piggers, which can, for some of them, easily cause diabetes).

Green and yellow bell peppers are great sources of Vitamin C. Each pigger can also have 1 or 2 two cherry tomatoes a day, which also have vitamin c. A good, high quality pellet, along with at least a cup of fresh veggies (they need at least a cup per pig of green leafy veggies) containing enough vitamin c then you shouldn't have to supplement.
