Will soft water harm a guinea pig2007-11-24 22:20:09

I know this isn't answering your original question, but it's in response to a response above ~ : o )

As far as the water softener? You may want to have it tested ~ some water softeners contain high levels of salt which would be dangerous for your piggers!

Until you know for sure, you should probably be giving them purified water, which isn't really expensive. Many guinea pigs also prefer this and drink more water (which is healthy), as the purified water doesn't have the chemicals and other stuff that tap water does.

yes... it won't harm them... my water is filled with minerals and the water company thing (i have a well) said that theres no way of filtering it, so I just use bottled water...

yes it should be fine . i have a female guinea pig and she drinks water from my tap,however at such a young ur guinea pigs are i recommend spring or distilled water.

first of all you dont really need any vitamin c supliment. just give them the right amount or vegtables, pellets, and timothy hay. im pretty sure as long as its ok for you to drink it, it will be ok. but just to be sure, put it in somthing like an empty milk carton without a cap and let it sit for a few days so all the bad stuff evaporates.

It really depends upon the water in your area. You should have your water tested for any high concentrations of minerals or impurities.

I use a water filter/purifier that is mounted under my sink and attached to the faucet. Some water softener systems have purification capabilities, so I'd check your system to see if it does. Alternately, since you have only two pigs, buying purified water is not that expensive and will save you potential vet bills later down the line.
