I've had rabbits for years. I've tried using expensive shavings/ bedding, but their skin can get raw from the shavings, and some have allergies to it. I have shredded newspaper and put it in their nest boxes when they kindle. I have also used it in cage trays. I haven't had any problems yet. It's absorbent, cheap, and keeps little babies snug in the nest box.
Newspaper ink is non-toxic and soy based, generally speaking. I haven't seen one in several years that didn't use this kind.
