Worried abour Guinea Pig
Her name is Sheba. Sheba was diagnosed with kidney disease early this year. A significant loss of weight is a sign things aren't going so well. She has been gaining weight and shot up to 2200 g.. Now in the past week, she is down to 1160 (which is still overweight). We have been taking her out 4 times a day to run around in the past week. Would this be the amount of exercise she is getting or kidney disease? I'm so worried. The vet said kidney disease usually gets bad after 2 years but I'm so worried. She is my best friend and I do not have many friends at all. She survived scurvy and is running when she was told she was not going to walk again. 40 grams in a week. Is this serious?
Answers:This is quite an involved situation. I would suggest going to a more knowledgable forum and asking your exact same question. http://guinealynx.info has awesome forums with a lot of guina pig experts that may have had similar experiences. They will be able to give you much more reliable advice than you will get here.
I don't know much about what kidney disease does in guinea pigs, but if you are upping the exercise and keeping her diet the same you may see some weight loss. That's not saying that it's nothing to do with her illness.
Good Luck and Best Wishes!
Her weight loss isn't good, it's probably because of the kidney disease. You might let her rest from exercising a little bit though. I'm not sure theres much you can do for her, with the disease other then keep her happy. Make sure you give her lots of veggies and love, and keep her comfortable. Hope that helps, and I hope she lives alot longer!
Maybe it is kidney disease and something else?
My rat weighs 280g, but she lost weight over a four day period, and was down to 170. We took her to the vets, it was an Upper Respiratory Infection, and they gave us some meds for that... So maybe she has recently caught this?
Also, if you are letting her run outside in the grass, there could be ticks in the grass(horrible little things that can kill cats, dogs, rats, etc, and make people feel really sick) Check her skin! Mainly behind ears, in the areas where the skin is extra warm (under her legs, under her jaw...) and take her to the vets!
Good luck!
