Worried about my hamster2007-11-24 22:20:12

I have only had my honey bear hamster for two weeks and I'm becoming worried about him. when I look at his mouth his teeth show I'm worried if that's a sign it his teeth are overgrown. if it is I can't get him to use his chewstick are there any tips for that? and also his hands are growing nails too do I need to do anything about that? THANK YOU FOR YOUR ANSWERS!!

i used to give my hamster toilet paper roll, as they will chew on it to stop the teeth overgrown. i have some answer for the teeth problem:

overgrown teeth caused usually be the diet not demanding sufficient chewing, may need clipping and filing back by a veterinarian. Feeding too many sweet treats and household tidbits can, as in children, lead to caries (cavities) in the teeth.

As for the overgrown claws- lack of opprtunity to dig and climb. Usually cause this problem.

NEVER trim a hamster's nails without professional help. They are tiny and have nerves in them that you could damage. And about the teeth, try salt or veggie wheels. [salt is better] Hamsters love them and they help keep the teeth filed down well.

I agree. never trim a hamsters nails without professional help. If there teeth become overgrown then they will not be able to eat or drink . try salt wheels or things that involve chewing such as sunflower seeds (unsaltecd ofcourse) If it gets any worse take her to the vet to get her teeth filed!

for the teeth i use toilet paper rolls. they chew on them but they dont eat them. its safe and not expensive.

try feeding the hamster carrot. Hamsters like carrots, and it helps the teeth so that should work a bit!

give em toilet paper rolls to chew on, petsmart sells these little hut looking things they crawl in and chew on too. also pieces of dog biscuits help as well.

Take him to a vet to get his teeth filed and nails trimmed. To keep his nails down, put a rock under his water bottle.
