Would a gerbil make a good pet for a 9yrold2007-11-24 22:20:13

Gerbils are horrible. They bite, and are never very nice.

Guinea pigs are good pets. They are bigger, and although take a bit more work, they are actually pretty smart, and can learn their name, tricks, ect.

i Guess. they are fast and need alot of work. you have to refil the water everyday, play with it everyday and chage food and have excersise stuff. its can be alot of work aside from homework and everything.

Well actually no they wouldn't, they bite to much, and rats are much better. You can even teach some rats tricks! The cheepest rat I ever got was 2.99 a rat. Thier really cheep and I've seen them in pet stores more often than gerbils. And if you do get a rat, try getting two females or one female, thier much better then males because the females are usually more active then males because the males tend to sleep a lot.

I agree with kitty kat. The gerbils I owned would bite. We currently have 3 female rats. You really need two, they are very social and will entertain each other while your child is at school or sleeping. With patients you can potty train them and teach them tricks. They don't smell unless you fail to clean the cage. They have a short life span of 2-3 years so it's not something you will have to worry about for the next 10 years. My kids are 9 and 5 and they love them to death.
