Would a guinea pig be okay in a cage next to a rat cage2007-11-24 22:20:13

I have room in my room for another cage, and I'd like to have guinea pigs. The only place I have for a guinea pig cage is near my rat, Sugar's cage. She's quite old, so I don't think it would bother her, I'm worried about the piggie. Would it be okay with a nocturnal animal right next to it, since they sleep at night?

I don't think the cages next to each other will be a problem at all..just as long as they can't touch each other. Even though piggies are diurnal, I don't think it'll bother them too much since they get up for snacks at night too.

I am concerned about the window comment though. Even if the window is closed & the blinds are closed, you'll have extra heat there during summer & it will be extra *cold* there in winter.

Is there anyway to arrange your furnishings so that you don't have to put your piggies by the window? They are very susceptible to temperature changes & drafts can make them ill. It would be best if they had a more constant temperature controlled area.

the pig will do fine by the rat. my friend did that before. she had 2 female eats, and a guinea pig right bye it. they where fine.

A guinea pig should be fine next to your rat, and I wouldn't recomend keeping it near a window even if there is no direct sun, but I suppose if there is no way for cold air to leak through it in the winter then it should be fine. Also keep in mind that guinea pigs require high concentrations of vitamin C to survive, make sure you get a book on them and do your research, maybe even join an online forum about them. They are so cute and loads of fun! Good luck with your newest family member!
