Would a male rat escape through a cage with 1" spacing between bars2007-11-24 22:20:13Answers:

I would imagine an adult male rat would easily get through a one (1) inch bar spacing, but more importantly will he bother?

The best way to tell if your rat in particular can get through the bar spacing of you cage or any cage is to check the size of your rats head. While holding your rat, very gently use your thumb and forefinger to gauge the width of his skull (basically just below the eyes near the back of the jaw), then do the same for the thickness (I suggest from between the ears to the bottom of the jaw). Which ever is the smaller size is slightly larger than the absolute largest spacing your particular rat can be placed in.

This is why: A rat can sqeeze through any whole its head can get through, no matter the size of the body.

Now, I use Ferret Nation cages, which have a bar spacing of approximately 7/8 inch. IF my boys were truly determined they would be able to get through, but I also spend a great deal of time training them to recognize their boundaries from a very young age. Even my 3 month old males that can easily slip through the bar spacing whenever they please have learned with time and patience that they are not to, so at most they will poke only their head through for a scritch as I pass by.

I would say that there is a possibility that it may escape. Although their bone structure isn't the same as hamsters for example (they cannot completely flatten), to be on the safe side, I would get a cage with a little less spacing between the bars.
Yes! you need smaller spacing to keep a rat in.
yes. they will find a way. maybe half inch would be better. unless its a huge rat.
Well, it really depends on the size of the rat itself. Some rats are too big to squeeze through, but many could! I would suggest a different cage.
I would think that it could get out, but it depends on how big ur rat is. I wouldn't want to chance it tho.
Well it really depends on the size of your Rattie
