Would it be bad if I kept a pet rat in a 10 gallon tank2007-11-24 22:20:15

Because I know that i would usually need a bigger cage but i can't really afford one and i already have a 10 gallon tank.

If the rat isn't too big for it, then it is fine. But you need to get a cage as soon as you can so that he can run around and get exercise.

Why not. If you feel like it's confining to him, potty train him to that tank and then allow him freedom to run the house. Why not!

yeah itll be fine. i had 2 pet rats, and they had a fairly large cage, but i put some chew toys, and some stuff they can climb on in it to take care of the space. the only problem was that since the cage was so big, i spen lots of money on bedding, since they like to burrow in it. But anyways, it should be fine, just put some extras in it

Rats should really be in hamster/rat cages. Rat cages with a starter pack aren't that much. Critter Trail makes good products too. If you want, get your money back with the tank, and buy a cage.

Well yes that is too small- I kept mine in 3 ft by 2 ft cage - no glass ones- it gets too hot for them during the hot seasons.

Not at all. Just make sure that the top can be secured tightly, and they have stuff to climb on. My cousin kept some that way, and they thrived and bred. A warning though, the tank will be harder to clean, because the wet litter tends to stick to the bottom.

There isn't much ventilation in an aquarium and they're much harder to clean than cages. It may be ok for one rat if it's small, but not when it's full grown. And you should really have at least two. Rats usually don't lead solitary lives.
